Lampeter and Maesglas produced a truly memorable game in the third round of the J Emrys Morgan Cup as they shared ten goals at the end of extra time before the visitors went through on the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
From the first whistle the tie was played at a frantic pace with the home side taking the lead after only three minutes when Terry Witts netted from a Mark Wilkins through ball.
Phil Furney then squandered an easy chance from three yards before Chris Jones following a move down the left equalised with a neat effort over the head of home keeper Darren Gregson.
Lampeter regained the lead after twenty four minutes through substitute Luke Parish and then following good chances at both ends Chris Jones bagged his second just before the interval with a half volley past keeper Gregson.
Maesglas grabbed the lead for the first time two minutes into the second half when after Dai Cole had been pulled down in the penalty box Dominic Williams converted the spot-kick.
The home side responded well. Within seven minutes an excellent goal from Osian Williams brought them back on level terms before a Jason Davies low shot gave them the lead for the third time.
Maesglas were not to be outdone and their efforts were justifiably rewarded when Dai Cole netted a deserved equaliser that took the game into extra time.
As the tension mounted Dominic Williams netted a cracking goal into the top left corner for what seemed to be the winner. Lampeter however, were not yet beaten and after a couple of half chances forced the game into the penalties decider through Mark Wilkins whose effort was only half saved by opposing keeper Rhodri Jones.
With only James Gudgeon being able to convert his penalty for the home side Maesglas eventually won the day as Chris Jones, Dai Cole and Dominic Williams made no mistake in ensuring their side's place in the next round.
In the same competition extra time was also needed to settle the tie between Crannog and Bont which, on the whole turned out to be a disappointing affair.
The best football of the game came in the first half with both Trevor Jenkins and Scott Rowe going close for the visitors.
After a drab second period the penalty kick decider loomed before Cynyr Ifan settled the game barely two minutes before the end of extra time with a well struck shot from twenty five yards following a good run down the left.
Also in the J Emrys Morgan Cup there were home defeats for both Aberporth and SDUC against Abermule and Bettws respectively.
Of the two games played in the Fist Division the most significant was the one between New Quay and St Dogmaels with their win taking the visitors to the top of the table. For the Saints Johnny James led the way with two well taken first half goals and hard though they tried the homesters could only muster one in reply as Chris Atkinson netted from close range.
Despite the poor conditions Ffostrasol and Llandysul fought out an entertaining encounter at Parc Troedyrhiw. After an even opening Gethin Thomas gave the home side the lead on thirty two minutes with a well struck effort from over twenty yards.
In the second half Llandysul fought gallantly to level the score only to see substitute Geraint Davies clinch the points for the home side with a good goal. |
